Background: The digital age, also known as the Information Age or Computer Age, is a period in contemporary history characterized by the transition from a traditional industry-based economy to an economy based on information technology and the digitalization of processes. Within this era, the expansion of mobile gaming has transformed User Interface (UI) design into a frontier where player intent is translated into in-game action. In the mobile context, limited screen real estate, touch ergonomics challenges, and varied usage conditions have caused the UI to function as much more than a mere visual layer. However, evaluating game UIs using traditional and general software principles is reductionist, and there is a conspicuous lack of a cohesive framework to explain the specific challenges of mobile games.
Objective: The present study was conducted with the aim of extracting specialized themes and providing an integrated conceptual framework for UI design in mobile games.
Method: This descriptive-analytical study was implemented based on the PRISMA systematic review protocol. A targeted search was conducted in the Scopus citation database, digital libraries including ACM, IEEE, Springer, ScienceDirect, and the Google Scholar search engine for the period between 2015 and 2025. After screening and applying qualitative inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 key studies were ultimately selected. Data were coded and analyzed using the inductive thematic analysis method.
Findings: The results indicated that mobile game UI design goes beyond general usability principles and is built upon four overarching categories: Visual Refinement and Game Space Management, Touch Ergonomics and Flexible Control, Visual Integration of System and Narrative, and Multisensory Feedback and Immersion.
Conclusion: These components do not function in isolation but rather shape the player experience within a synergistic interactive system. Specifically, optimizing dynamic minimalism requires narrative interfaces to clear space for ergonomic controllers—a process that would remain ineffective without sensory and haptic feedback. This conceptual framework elevates the traditional understanding of usability and provides a strategic foundation for game designers.
