Background: Resilience is an essential ability that helps people maintain their psycho-social health in the face of the challenges of the migration phenomenon. The influence of family and parents in the process of forming resilience as a developmental concept, while the researches have not determined which parental behaviors in facing the stressor of immigration help people to cope with its challenges.
Aim: the purpose of the present study is to identify parental factors that affect resilience in Afghan immigrants.
Method: qualitative method and interpretive phenomenological design were used in this research. The participants in this research were 14 Afghan immigrants who had migrated to Iran for education and at least one year had passed since their migration. They scored one standard deviation higher than the mean in the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RIS) and had no history of drug or psychiatric medication use. Also, the minimum age of the participants was 20 years These people were selected by purposeful sampling method and snowball strategy. A semi-structured interview was used to collect data. The text of the interviews were analyzed with Dikelman's seven-step method.
Results: In the coding process, 335 primary codes were extracted. In the next step, the obtained codes were categorized into 18 concepts based on semantic similarity. Then the obtained concepts were categorized under the heading of 6 main categories, which are: 1- Cultivating goal-oriented orientation 2- Creating a platform for challenges 3- Persistence in advancing the path 4- Expanding support resources 5- Enhancing the sense of sufficiency 6- Efficient family structure were categorized.
Conclusions: The findings of the present study show the methods that parents of resilient immigrants use to foster resilience in their children, taking into account economic and social differences. The discovered parental factors enable immigrants to cope with and return to the unique challenges of migration.
